Often when you’re choosing a recruitment agency it’s because you don’t have the time or resources to commit to the recruitment process, or it could be because you’re struggling to find the right talent and you’re hoping your recruitment partner might be able to! However choosing the right recruitment partner and getting the most from them is important so here are our top tips to help:

Do Your Research

You need to first do your research to learn about the experience of the business that you’re considering working with and how they operate. There are a lot of agencies out there and the way they target and shortlist candidates is very different, so it’s certainly worth understanding that before you make a decision. It can be tempting to go with the big household names, however smaller agencies access the same talent pool and can deliver you more of a tailored service.

Choose a Specialist

When you’re looking for a role in a specialist area then opting for a specialist agency might be the right move for you. For example if you want an Accountant then choosing a recruitment agency that specialises in the recruitment of finance professionals will give you a recruitment partner who understands the demands of your business and the specific skills that you’re hoping to find.

Build a Rapport

It’s so important to build a strong relationship with your recruitment partner, and essential that they take the time to get to know you and your business. Meeting them face to face should be the starting point so you can discuss everything in detail, show them around your business and explain exactly how the role fits in to the current structure. You want to feel confident that they understand your business and that they have the opportunity to ask questions and answer any that you might have.

Know Who You’re Looking For

To make sure you get the best from your recruitment partner then you need to have a good idea of who you’re looking for. So think about what skills and experience are essential, and what the desirables are, so you can make sure they understand what the ideal candidate looks like to you. Let them know if you’re open to any wildcard options too so you don’t miss out on a good person who might just not be perfect on paper!

Set a Timescale

If you need a person in position by a certain date then make sure that your recruiter knows that’s the date they’re working towards. If you agree this upfront then everyone is on the same page. Of course you need to make sure that the deadline is realistic and that you’re not putting unnecessary pressure on the process, as you could end up rushing yourself in to a decision and ending up with what turns out to be an unsuitable candidate.

Make Yourself Available

Your day is probably insanely busy which is why you chose to work with a recruitment partner in the first place! However if you’re too busy to take calls to discuss potential candidates or book time for interviews then you could end up missing out on the perfect person. Perhaps try and schedule a time for a regular catch up, or involve a trusted colleague who can make initial decisions on your behalf.

It’s essential that you have a strong line of communication with your recruitment partner. Make sure you offer feedback throughout the recruitment process, to let the recruiter know whether they’re on the right track or way off base. Also make use of their knowledge and experience by asking their opinion on the candidates, especially if you’re struggling to decide between two different people as they may be able to give you a fresh and unbiased view.

Pick One Partner

If you work with just one recruitment partner then you’re only having to deal with one person throughout the process, and so are the applicants! Using more than one agency can mean you’ll end up with duplicate applicants and perhaps end up making the process take longer than it needs to. Also by granting exclusivity, some agencies will offer extra elements to their service or offer a reduced rate to thank you for your loyalty.

Initially choosing a recruitment agency can be a little time consuming, however once you’ve found the recruitment partner that is right for you, you’re building a long standing relationship that will help you find the future leaders for your business.
