Whatever your top recruitment headache is, you’re unlikely to be alone. Hiring managers and in-house recruiters alike all face similar challenges when hiring – but thankfully Optimum Recruitment has, through over 20 years of placing candidates, found solutions to the most common issues.

The challenge: People are applying – but no one is qualified

How to solve it:

We all know that, when it comes to applicants, quality matters more than quantity. Review your job advertisement to check that the requirements are clear and stand out. Avoid lengthy paragraphs and instead include bullet points to increase readability. You can also use online applications which ‘knock out’ applicants if they answer ‘no’ to a question that is critical, i.e. if they have a driving license. You may also want to utilise a recruitment agency to support you in engaging passive candidates (those open to opportunities but who aren’t actively looking) rather than waiting for candidates to approach you.

The challenge: We need someone in-role very quickly

How to solve it:

When a role is business-critical, there can be a lot of pressure to get a new employee in situ as quickly as possible. If you’re finding the hiring process is taking too long, audit the stages and ask yourself whether they are all really required – is there anything you can cut out? Are you communicating quickly with each other and with candidates, progressing them to the next stage as quickly as possible?

Sometimes, it’s just natural that a role will take longer to fill if it’s a particularly hard-to-find skill set. If this is the case, you may need to manage the expectations of the hiring team and the rest of the business, set out a realistic timeline and explain that a bad hire could end up costing even more time and money.

The challenge: We can’t get the attention of top candidates

How to solve it:

You’re competing against the noise of thousands of other job openings, hiring managers and recruiters. The best way to address this is to develop a great employer brand that has candidates chasing you, not the other way around. Ways to build your employer brand include replying to all online reviews (good and bad); and sharing real employee stories on your website and LinkedIn.

The challenge: My great candidates are getting other offers

How to solve it:

Most candidates will be actively pursuing other offers while interviewing with you. The best solution is to make the interview a great experience: 65% of candidates say that a bad interview experience makes them lose interest in the job. Be sure to answer their questions and provide as much detail as they need. Help them to see themselves in the role by having them walk the floor of the office and meet their potential team. Even a brief hello with a senior member of staff could make all the difference.

The other challenge we know many hiring managers face is that there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to dedicate to recruitment. It’s a full-time job in and of itself. Optimum Recruitment works to save hiring managers and in-house recruiters time, whilst still providing the top-tier of candidates. Please do get in touch if you’d like to know more about how we could help solve your recruitment challenges.
