Take it from a recruitment agency: we know first-hand that recruitment is a full-time job. Juggling writing job descriptions and adverts; wading through CVs; whittling down candidates through phone interviews… and that’s before anyone has even come through the door.
That’s why it’s understandable that many hiring managers, for whom recruitment is only one facet of their job, find the hiring process tricky to balance. It might seem like finding your new staff member is taking up a disproportionate amount of your time, and that you fall behind on other tasks or are having to rely more on your team and peers. As experienced recruiters, here are Optimum Recruitment’s top tips on juggling hiring when it isn’t your only job:
Try setting tighter deadlines
For those roles less tricky to hire for, save time by sticking to a strict timeframe. Try reducing that six-week hiring cycle down to a month, be stricter with how long candidates have to apply, and aim to turn around reviewing CVs as quickly as possible. Though a more intense hiring process will take up more time initially, it’ll also allow you to get back to your day job sooner.
Dedicate set time to recruitment
You may find that the hiring process is seeping into all parts of your working day, making you ineffective at the other parts of your job. You may want to set aside specific time in your diary for recruitment tasks, i.e. two hours in the morning, and then be strict with yourself about sticking to this routine. This means you’ll be able to properly move out of the recruitment headspace and back into your normal work, which may help you to get more done.
Carry out as much of the recruitment process remotely as possible
In this digital age, you have a vast amount of tools at your disposal to help you save time by carrying out parts of the process remotely. Instead of having interviewees come in for two rounds of interviews, try carrying out the first round via video chat. This has the added benefit of saving interviewees time and money too.
Partner with a recruitment agency
The best way to juggle recruitment alongside a full-time job is to have someone else carry out the complex and time-consuming tasks on your behalf. Recruitment agencies can help with creating and posting job ads, sourcing and screening candidates, and negotiations and administration. Great recruiters are able to save you a huge amount of time by presenting you with candidates they believe are the perfect fit – leaving you to simply carry out the interviews and make your decision.
