A one on one interview tends to be the most popular interview style used currently, however we do see a number of companies, particularly larger organisations, opting for a panel interview. A panel interview can be a little daunting when you first enter the room, as it can feel like you have even more people to impress. However by preparing in advance it can be a great opportunity and also give you more of a chance to learn about the company from different perspectives.

What is a panel interview?

A panel interview is when two or more people interview you for a potential role. Companies often opt for a panel interview when there is more than one stakeholder invested in the position, as it allows each individual the opportunity to have an input on the person selected. In large organisations you will often find a member of the Human Resources team present to answer basic employment questions, with other members contributing to industry-specific information about the role.

Tips for a Panel Interview

Do your research

It’s so important to do your research in advance of the interview, as it’s highly likely that you’ll be asked what you know about the company. There is so much information that you can access online to learn about the history of the organisation as well recent news so you can see where the company is heading. You can also learn about competitors and where the brand fits in the industry so you have a good grounding to handle any questions.

If you’re notified in advance as to who will be in the interview then do a little online research so you have a basic understanding of their role within the company. LinkedIn is a good place to start and any other relevant professional sites that might provide information about their background and when they joined the organisation.

Acknowledge each panel member

One of the most important things to remember when attending a panel interview is to engage with every panel member. Though it might be clear from the outset who your future manager will be, you shouldn’t dismiss the other members as they’re all in the interview for a reason and therefore will have an input on the final decision. Introduce yourself to each panel member on entering the room with a handshake and be sure to make good eye contact with each member when answering questions.

It’s also important to think about your body language in a panel interview, as when one panel member is asking you a question, it’s likely that the other members are assessing how you answer and your general demeanour. Be sure to sit up straight and have open and welcoming body language to help you connect with the people in the room.

Interview the panel

You should always remember that an interview is as much for you to learn about the company as it is for them to learn about you. A panel interview is a fantastic opportunity to get to know more about the organisation from different perspectives and across different departments. Prepare a number of questions in advance and be sure to ask the question of the whole panel so it gives each member the opportunity to answer.

One good question to ask is, “What do you enjoy about working here?”. In a one on one interview you’re getting the perspective of one individual who likely works in the department you’re applying for. However in a panel interview you’re getting a much broader view to help you make the right decision for your career if you’re offered the job.

Be sure to follow up

At the end of the interview you should thank each member of the panel for their time. If you’re offered business cards or given contact information prior to the interview then you should follow up with a simple email, reiterating your gratitude for the interview and mentioning again how much you would like the job and, very briefly, the reasons why.

If you’re unsuccessful then it’s important that you ask the company for feedback. Feedback is essential in the job hunting process as it can identify issues that you might not be aware of or any gaps in your experience that you could easily fill. However we’re sure that by being yourself and engaging with each member of the panel, you’ll be well on your way to that all important job offer!
